Our First Fundraising Activity

Friday 29th November 2012 - Bake Sale

This was our first fundraising activity which took place in our school hall (Nonsuch High School). The day before, the whole team got together and went to my place after school to start baking. We were planning on making all sorts of things: cookies, cakes, cupcakes, pancakes, waffles, milkshakes, bracelets. We even thought of selling tacos and burritos. Of course, when we came to baking it all, there was no way we could make all the things we had planned to so we cut half of it down to selling ice cream waffles, 5 types of cupcakes, brownies, doughnuts and bracelets.

When we were shopping, someone *cough* Saara, Viuna, Grace, LiAnn, Shivani, EVERYONE *cough* decided we should split up, half of us going to Sainsbury's and half going to Waitrose. Which was a big mistake. In the end, we were literally screeching down our phones trying to figure out where we were getting the best deals. It kind of worked, but when we were finishing, we needed something from Sainsbury's (LiAnn, Viuna and Shivani were with me at Waitrose) but when we called them, they were already at Waitrose with us.
The baking was probably worse though. The kitchen was crammed with 6 teenage girls cooking - or at least trying to cook. I ended up having absolutely nothing to work with, such as cupcake trays or a scale (I broke it, OK. Don't blame me!). Plus, there was a lack of mixing bowls. But we managed somehow. But afterwards, the cleaning up was a nightmare! The sink had overflown with bowls and spoons; there was icing all over the counters; I couldn't find the correct lid for any of the plastic containers!

On the day, I managed to carry 6 big bags full of food to school with no help because I'm as strong as superman. Ok, not really - but I'm close! We sold all of our waffles which was a hit but in the end, we still had some leftovers and were unsuccessful to sell all of our cakes or bracelets.

On the plus side, we raised over £60. We hope to soon increase that to over £600!

Busking for WOHAA

As a group, we collectively have a wide variety talents. We can all play one sort of instrument or another, thus we decided it a good idea to busk in order to raise money for WOHAA in our local shopping town.

We are teaming up with another WOHAA group and will be busking together in the following weeks - and we've ambitiously decided to learn 20 songs to play!

For now, we are meeting up to rehearse at lunchtimes and after schools several times a week and have learnt a lot of the songs we are hoping to sing. We are planning to do some sort of charity work once a week to make sure we are making the most of our WOHAA experience and raising money for a very good cause.

The French Toast Mafia - The beginning

The Wings Of Hope Charity is an organisation that helps poor or orphaned children by providing them with a free education. These children are based in developing countries such as India or Malawi.

We began our adventure when a lady from the organisation came in and gave us a short presentation about WOHAA. At the end, I decided that there was no chance I was going to miss this offer to get out and do something other than sitting on the sofa watching Atlantis or Glee (Despite my love for it).

A week later, we had a group of 6 eager girls (Fizz, Grace, LiAnn, Saara, Shivani and Viuna) and two weeks after, we were already brainstorming activities we could do. However, most of them were slightly out of reach as we forgot we were broke - something I was getting straight A's in. None of us were millionaires and we reminded ourselves to keep it realistic, something that I find pretty difficult along with others.

Let's put all that boring stuff aside now, shall we? And now we move onto what we do in Wohaa. We have until March 31st to do all the knitty-gritty work and raise as much as we can for a chance to fly to India to help out in one of their schools. After all that is done with, the semi-finalists will be selected to go to the House of Lords and deliver a short presentation. finally, in May/June, the awards ceremony will be held.

We are looking forward to complete all of our fundraising ideas within the time of three weeks. This blog will be where we post all of our videos, pictures, events and if you're reading this, our group and lots of less fortunate children would appreciate any donations or sponsors, even if it's a small one
